The Breathtaking Resource of Second-Hand Silk.
The unmistakable spectacle of the colour, texture and pattern of India, is due, in no small part to the wearing of the silk saree. Everywhere the eye can see is an explosion of colour, covering every smiling human form.
Saree are worn as everyday garments, mostly in cotton, and for special occasions the silk pieces come out.
India has such an abundant secondhand silk saree trade because saree are traditionally made to last for decades and are often passed down, resold, donated or repurposed as fashions and family circumstances change. With silk saree woven into the fabric of weddings, festivals and everyday life across a vast population, generations of beautifully made garments eventually enter local markets and recycling networks. Their high-quality natural fibres and intricate craftsmanship make them too valuable to discard, creating a rich circular trade in pre-loved saree that can be worn again and transformed into entirely new garments.
Transforming a secondhand silk saree into a new garment is a labour of love. Each saree must be carefully inspected, washed and prepared before being unpicked, cut around imperfections and thoughtfully reworked to make the most of its unique colours, borders and patterns. Because no two saree are the same, every piece demands its own design process, pattern placement and careful construction—turning a length of pre-loved silk into a completely one-of-a-kind garment. There is no such thing as mass-produced here, EVERY SINGLE PIECE is individually manufactured, and that is the only way it can be. If you have ever wondered why you are paying such a price for your Outlaw Dame piece you can now understand how many hours goes into one single garment, and my absolute insistence on my tailors being paid appropriately.
There is an ever so slight possibility of your vintage silk piece appearing with the tiniest mark or slight imperfection. These silk have travelled a long way to reach you and any tiny mark is to be celebrated.
I truly hope you love and adore your spectacular piece of history. I wish you to fill your Outlaw Dame piece with renewed life, and feel glorious as you do.
With enormous love from my ever learning, ever expanding heart to yours. Elin, The Outlaw Dame.
